Jonathan Cafu may well be the most in-demand Brazilian you’ve never heard of, with four Premier League clubs queuing up for his services according to The Express – namely West Ham, Everton, Leicester City and newly promoted Brighton.
Indeed, the 25-year-old’s career has taken a rather unusual route, earning his breakthrough at Desportivo Brazil and even spending a short spell at Sao Paulo before making the switch to Bulgarian football in 2015.
The Bulgarian top flight isn’t the best barometer of ability, even when you’re talking about last season’s reigning champions in Ludogorets Razgrad, but the Champions League provided Cafu with a real platform to prove himself earlier this term as the Eagles made the group stages and he undoubtedly delivered.
Indeed, the winger-forward ended the group stages with two goals and two assists to his name, impressively enough with all but one coming against high quality opposition in PSG and Arsenal.
But in addition to his potency in the final third, it was Cafu’s ability when running with the ball that really stood out, completing 2.2 dribbles and winning a whopping 4.7 fouls per match. To put that into context, no player has a better fouls won rate in the Champions League this season, whilst he ranks 27th out of 380 in the dribble charts.
Of course, bringing your best form for the six biggest games of your career is a little different to producing it consistently over the course of a season – although Cafu has netted 14 times in all competitions this term. But in a division where counter-attacking has become more important than ever before, Cafu could prove a real asset for one of his Premier League suitors.
