da dobrowin: The defender wasn't the only one exposed on Monday as the U.S. looked totally off the pace
da brwin: Talk about crashing back down to Earth… that's exactly what happened to the U.S. women's national team on Monday night. Riding high after two wins to open the Gold Cup, the USWNT was reminded on Monday that this group still has a lot of work to do. The rebuild is in progress but Monday's loss to Mexico proved that this team is nowhere near ready and nowhere near complete.
Mexico took down the U.S. in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, running away with a much-deserved 2-0 win. In many ways, it felt like this was Mexico's game from the start. This was played their way on their terms, and the USWNT never really adjusted to that fact.
The first goal came from a USWNT mistake. Becky Sauerbrunn's horrible giveaway led to a lovely chipped finish from Lizbeth Ovalle. Alyssa Naeher didn't cover herself in glory on the goal, either, as she came off her line but could never get the ball before being chipped.
There was nothing Naeher could do on the second, though. Mayra Pelayo-Bernal's stoppage-time stunner effectively ended the game. That long-range curler was the end of the USWNT's hopes, ensuring there would be no undeserved draw on this night.
With the win, Mexico finish atop the group while becoming the first CONCACAF team to beat the U.S. on home soil since Canada in 2000. As for the U.S., it's back to the drawing board ahead of the knockout rounds. This run won't be easy, and that was made even more clear by Monday's humbling.

Alyssa Naeher (5/10):
The giveaway was where it all went wrong, but could have done better on the Mexico opener.
Crystal Dunn (5/10):
Not her best game. A bit sloppy and passing just wasn't quite crisp enough.
Becky Sauerbrunn (3/10):
Bad giveaway on the goal, which is so unlike her. Sauerbrunn is in this team to prevent that exact thing from happening. Even aside from that, overall just a bad game from a player that rarely looks this off the pace, despite her age.
Abby Dahlkemper (5/10):
Had to put out a lot of fires, which made it feel like she was playing panic-ball all night. Overall, though, she was solid enough to survive.
Emily Fox (6/10):
Was limited offensively due to the situation around her. With Sauerbrunn and Dahlkemper's lack of pace, Fox had to do a whole lot of running and dirty work, preventing her from really making an impact further up the field.

Sam Coffey (5/10):
Did a lot of good work, but the U.S. will need her to be a bit more confident and assertive. That, of course, comes with experience, which is what these games are for.
Lindsey Horan (5/10):
Mexico made it difficult for her all night. Was totally quiet in the first half, but grew into the game a bit. Never quite hit her best self, though.
Rose Lavelle (5/10):
Lacked the creativity and confidence that make her such a star. Hasn't quite had that since pre-World Cup, to be honest, as she continues to work her way back.

Lynn Williams (4/10):
Never really got going before being taken out at halftime. Overall, a very, very quiet game.
Sophia Smith (5/10):
Decision-making was just off. Held onto the ball a bit too long several times and, when she did pass, it often wasn't the right decision. The moments were there, but she just couldn't quite take advantage of them, which led to an early substitution.
Trinity Rodman (5/10):
Similar to Smith. Dribbled a bit too much a few times, but did have one chance late, which she put just wide.

Alex Morgan (6/10):
Definitely added a bit of creativity, but even her experience couldn't save a disconnected USWNT attack.
Emily Sonnett (6/10):
Was brought in to turn the tide in midfield. Never really could, though.
Korbin Albert (5/10):
A few bad giveaways defined her performance. Not one that will help her case too much.
Midge Purce (5/10):
Got carved up a bit on the second goal, but she's not a pure defender so that'll happen. Definitely not her fault that golazo went in.
Jaedyn Shaw (6/10):
Was given less than 15 minutes to work. Have to wonder how the U.S. would have fared if she was on a bit earlier.
Twila Kilgore (5/10):
We knew the rotation was coming, so no issues with that. Subs felt all wrong, though, as Mexico took control and never really let it go.
