Mary Earps has paid tribute to the “best roommate I ever had”, with the Lionesses star sending an emotional message to Toni Duggan on her retirement.

At the age of 33, former Everton, Manchester City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star Duggan has announced that she will be hanging up her boots. The classy forward earned 79 caps for England between 2012 and 2020, scoring 22 goals.

She struck up a close bond with Earps while enjoying international camps, with the pair sharing a similar sense of humour. Their friendship will continue away from the field, as they celebrate breaking down barriers in the women’s game.

Earps has said of Duggan on social media, alongside a collage of images: “Happy retirement my friend. Congratulations on an incredible career – so lucky to have known you and played alongside you. To call you not only a teammate but a friend. The best roommate I ever had & a player that paved the way for so many. One of a kind. So proud of you.”

Earps is now 31 years of age, but is showing no sign of slowing down. She has embraced a new challenge at club level in 2024, with the decision taken to leave WSL side Manchester United and head for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent. The Euro 2022 winner is also working hard to retain her starting berth with England.
