Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter has reportedly turned down the Ajax manager role as the Dutch giants allegedly could not match his salary demands.

The 48-year-old has been out of work since getting sacked by Chelsea in April 2023. The former Brighton head coach has been linked with roles at Manchester United, Crystal Palace and more recently Ajax. Now, Dutch publication claims Potter turned down Ajax's offer as it did not come close to the salary he wanted.

The report adds Ajax figureheads repeatedly met with Potter over taking on the job at the Amsterdam outfit and positive talks were held. While the job itself was an attractive one for the ex-Swansea City manager, they reportedly could not satisfy him enough financially.

Potter began his coaching career at Swedish side Ostersunds, where he was able to take them from the fourth tier to the top division in five years. From there, he had one season at Swansea, before joining Brighton in 2019 – where he turned them from a Premier League relegation candidate to a top 10 side over three seasons. However, he lasted less than seven months in charge at Stamford Bridge.

While Potter waits for the ideal managerial position to become available, Ajax have had a desperately bad season both in Europe and domestically. They sit fifth in the table, 35 points behind leaders PSV, and face Volendam on Saturday.
