Managerial merry-go-rounds are something we see on a daily basis in England with these moves gaining even more coverage than player some signings – look at the hype surrounded around Jose Mourinho’s move to Manchester United!
But one managerial switch that is also picking up a lot of headway this summer is Ronald Koeman’s proposed move to Everton from Southampton. Whilst it’s nowhere near as media intensive as Mourinho’s journey to Old Trafford, it’s causing a lot of debate on both sides as to the motives of the trip north.
Realistically, it is a step down when you take history and previous honours out of the question. Whilst Everton have a richer past with more trophies and notable wins, Southampton are well and truly becoming one of the driving forces in the modern day Premier League.
What makes Southampton’s feat all the more impressive is how they’ve adapted and picked themselves up after Mauricio Pochettino’s departure. The Argentine did great things in the St Mary’s dug-out and no one expected Koeman to match the sort of success the now-Spurs man brought to the South coast.
Last season they qualified for the Europa League under Koeman, and managed to develop another crop of key players. The likes of Sadio Mane, Shane Long and Steve Davis all shone under the Dutchman and they all have a European venture to look forward to as a result of their hard work.
Unfortunately, the Saints may struggle to hold onto some of their bigger names, but they are in a position now that they are able to financially compete with some of the biggest sides in the Premier League.
So a move to Everton is risky for Koeman. The Toffees bosses showed no remorse as they ruthlessly axed the former Wigan Athletic manager towards the end of last season and if Koeman wants a massively successful managerial career in England, he will want to avoid the same fate faced by the Spaniard.
But what has really got some Southampton fans a little upset is the motives behind the move. A £6m pay packet has been offered in an attempt to tempt the Dutchman but you have to look at it in a plainer context – Southampton are a team on the up with Europe to look forward to. Everton are a divided squad with a number of key players seemingly unhappy at the club – with the likes of Romelu Lukaku publicly stating his desire to leave.
It’s going to be a tough job if Koeman does indeed take the reigns at Goodison, as their fans are a notoriously difficult bunch to convince. But if he can turn fortunes around on Merseyside he could prove extremely successful and be there for a very long time.
