According to The Sun, West Ham United want to sign Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia on a free transfer at the end of the season.
What’s the word, then?
Valencia will see his contract with United expire next June, and it is thought that the Ecuador international could be allowed to move on for nothing.
The 33-year-old is still United’s captain, but he has not turned out for the Red Devils in the Premier League since September 22.
Injuries have disrupted Valencia’s campaign, but he has fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho, and could depart on a free at the end of the season.
According to The Sun, West Ham are interested in bringing the defender to the London Stadium, with Pablo Zabaleta expected to move on at the end of the season.
The report adds that Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is a ‘huge fan’ of the South American, who played for Wigan Athletic before joining United.
Should West Ham move for Valencia?
Valencia played as a right winger for United during his first few years at the club, but has gradually developed into a right-back.
He has won two Premier League titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford, and has made 336 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Valencia has appeared on 239 occasions for United in the Premier League, whilst he also turned out 84 times for Wigan in the top flight of English football.
The Ecuador international would not be a long-term option for West Ham, but would be the perfect player to replace Zabaleta for a season or two.
The defender might have fallen out of favour at United – and his crossing leaves a lot to be desired – but bringing a strong and experienced professional to West Ham on a free transfer makes complete sense for the capital club.
