Such is the pull of the Premier League, the rumours surrounding English football’s top tier are generally in regards to which stars could be arriving. However, there are a number of top players who make the move abroad once they feel they’ve outgrown the Premier League: Gareth Bale and Philippe Coutinho are just two examples. This year, several of those plying their trade in this country have been linked with a move away. Here, we take a look at 10 major Premier League exits that could happen this summer…
Paul Pogba may be Manchester United’s record signing, but his time at Old Trafford could soon be over. The French World Cup winner said as much in June. The 26-year-old has been linked to Real Madrid and Juventus in particular, and it seems unlikely that the Red Devils would allow the midfielder to join a rival in the Premier League. As such, if he were to leave the 20-time English champions this summer, a move away from England would be the likeliest outcome.
Pogba isn’t the only big-name Premier League midfielder that is being eyed by Los Merengues. The 13-time European champions are also looking at Christian Eriksen, it is being reported. There is also another Spanish club that has been linked with the Denmark international. The 27-year-old has apparently been offered to Real’s city rivals Atletico. Manchester United have also been mentioned as a potential destination for the for Ajax man, who has made comments indicating his desire to leave his current club, but it would surely be unwise for Tottenham to allow such a talented playmaker to move to a direct competitor.
So far during this gallery, there is a running theme: players who have insinuated via the press that they want to move to a new club. In regards to Romelu Lukaku, it is much the same story, although the words alluding to a desire for a switch have come from his agent rather than the horse’s mouth. Internazionale have been heavily linked with a transfer for the Belgium international, and have recently had a bid for the 26-year-old rejected. That has reportedly led them to turn their interest to Edin Dzeko instead, but a Premier League exit for the former Everton striker remains a possibility.
Mesut Ozil has not been one of the most popular figures at the Emirates Stadium in recent times, and his performance in the 2019 Europa League final came under particularly heavy fire. After that game, he is reported to have told Gunners manager Unai Emery that he “is not a coach”, which is the kind of comment that rarely leads to a bond between a manager and a player. Such is the London outfit’s desperation to move the former Germany international on, it is understood that they are even willing to subsidise his wages to see him leave. There has been little in the way of updates on the 30-year-old’s future recently, but the transfer window still has some way to go yet.
Whilst Ozil could be on the way out, Arsenal have been linked with a move for Wilfried Zaha. However, their transfer budget has appeared to be a problem so far, with the latest reported bid still some way off what Crystal Palace want for the 26-year-old. The Gunners, though, are not the only club interested in the Ivory Coast international. In their search for a winger, Bayern Munich are targeting the former Manchester United man, with the Bavarians even reportedly considering a bid.
With an official offer yet to be lodged from the Bundesliga champions for Zaha, Bayern are still looking at other wide options as well, one of which is Leroy Sane. Niko Kovac and co have made no secret of their desire to bring in the Manchester City man this summer, although Pep Guardiola has stated he does not want the 23-year-old to leave. The saga has taken a slightly bitter turn in recent days, with Karl-Heinz Rummennige insinuating that the former Barcelona boss does not know what is going on at his club. The latest news is that the Allianz Arena outfit have received “positive signs” from the Germany international’s camp, which could be an indication of a potential move.
With just one year left on his current contract and no new deal currently on the table, the end of Toby Alderweireld’s stay at Tottenham is drawing ever closer. Roma have been heavily linked with a move for the Belgium international, with Giallorossi director Gianluca Petrachi confirming that the Serie A outfit would be willing to take the former Southampton defender to the Stadio Olimpico. There have been reports that Tottenham have even tried to use the 30-year-old as a pawn in their attempts to sign Nicolo Zaniolo from the Italian club.
Tiemoue Bakayoko has now returned to Stamford Bridge following a year on loan at AC Milan, and Frank Lampard’s comments that all of his players will get a chance to prove themselves under him indicates that there may still be life in his Chelsea career. However, the 24-year-old has been the subject of interest from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and even told L’Equipe that he would like to play for the club from the French capital one day. The former Monaco midfielder is yet to start a game during pre-season for the Blues, which may be an indication that the new boss is not overly enamoured with the enforcer.
Harry Maguire is not the only Leicester City player who could be on the move this summer. Left-back Ben Chilwell has impressed so much at the King Power Stadium that he has become Gareth Southgate’s number one option on the left side of the Three Lions defence. His quality showings have not gone unnoticed, with Atletico Madrid reportedly eyeing the 22-year-old. Los Rojiblancos have recently signed a player in his position in Renan Lodi, but he is currently the only option they have, so a move for Chilwell is not out of the question.
Barcelona will still be disappointed to not have signed Matthijs de Ligt, who eventually completed a move to Juventus this summer. They are still on the lookout for a centre-back, and Victor Lindelof has been targeted as a potential option. Mundo Deportivo reported earlier this month that the Catalan club and Manchester United spoke several times and, although the Premier League outfit told Ernesto Valverde and co that the Sweden international is not for sale, things can quickly change in football.
